I spent the weekend in my adopted home town of Providence, Rhode Island and went to my favorite farmers' market at Lippit Park. I got a bunch of really lovely cheeses, vegetable and meat, but I began to notice the patrons more critically. For the hour or so that I wandered around the stalls, I only saw one person of color. Subsequently, I have been thinking about access to high quality food, it's cost and widespread nutritional education (or lack thereof.) I want to see organizations like WIC and SNAP supported and advertised more prominently.
A meal from the market: arugula with goat cheese, chicken with feta and garlic scape sauce and candy cane beet salad with vinegar. All items on the plate with the exception of the salt and mustard dressing came from Rhode Island farms.
Rhode Island radishes display a myriad of summer colors.
